At some stage within this year the boys start their study of the GCSE specification in each of the Sciences. They will begin to study the new AQA 9-1 triple science specifications. These courses are studied over the three years and are assessed terminally in written exams. Specific details are outlined on each subject page.
Boys have a number of opportunities to further their knowledge of the applications of their studies with a number of enrichment activities. For example, Mrs Armstrong (the schools independent careers advisor) and the Science Faculty organises a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) day. This day involves a number of visitors discussing their work and career in these areas. Whilst the initial sessions are Keynote speeches with a large audience, some of the sessions are much smaller workshops where the small groups of boys have the opportunity to listen and talk informally to visitors about not just their work but how their career has progressed. As part of this day, boys have the opportunity to work in teams undertaking a ‘problem solving activity’ which is a competitive activity requiring good team work and the ability to work under time pressure.
