New opposition for a new season.
Gillingham were very keen for the fixture and it proved to be a perfect opener to get some court time before the National Competition matches. They unsurprisingly adopted a very static and non-threatening Zone which meant there was very little space inside. We recognised this and Pascalidis started the scoring with a wide open 3.
Unfortunately as it was our first game and our targeting was not efficient enough and we missed numerous open shots. However Williams demonstrated his prowess on the boards and picked up several second chance opportunities. It was our defence though that saw us rapidly pull away as we forced numerous turnovers which we then converted on the break and subsequently at the foul line as the defence scrambled to stop our drives.
Our comfortable lead gave the bench a chance to have a good run out and they amassed about a third of our total points. The defence remained strong, typified by the massive charge taken by Olly Grant late in the fourth!! Williams led all scorers with 19 and 11 boards to boot, Merry and Francis combined for 20 points 11 and 9 respectively.
